Freshman band, choir, or orchestra students at Southwoods can join Jazz Ensembles if they like jazz music. The two freshman jazz bands meet every other day during 7th hour, opposite physical education (P.E.). They also perform at festivals and contests across Iowa.

Marchmasters is an early bird class for all freshman band students. They perform at home football games, contests, and festivals statewide and nationally. There are camps in the summer and extended camps starting in August. During the school year, Marchmasters have a double early bird class from 6:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. until the end of October. Valley Southwoods Vocal Music has special singing groups like Syncopation (a 9th-grade jazz choir) and Ignition Show Choir (managed by Valley High School). Auditions for Ignition are in May of the previous year, and for jazz, they are in early October. To join any special group, you need to be part of regular choirs (Treble or Bass Clef). Dates for auditions and events will be shared later.

Valley Southwoods Drama Department teams up with Valley High School Drama Department to provide many chances for freshmen to join Drama activities. Some of these opportunities are Drama Camp, Thespian Festival, VSW Fall Production, I.H.S.S.A. Large Group Festival, Valley’s Spring Production, Improv. Night, and Southwoods spring mime show.

Apart from the usual orchestra class, students can join Mariachi Tigres de Valle and smaller groups like string quartets for performances in different places.
