Activities/Clubs

Tryouts for cheerleading teams happen in the spring of your 8th grade year before the 9th-grade fall/winter seasons. There's a required tryout meeting usually a week before spring break, and tryouts are typically the week after spring break.

There are 10 teams you can try out for, including

• JV Football
• Varsity Football
• JV Basketball
• Varsity Basketball
• JV Wrestling
• Varsity Wrestling
• Competition Squad (if on Varsity Football)
• JV Football Practice Squad
• JV Basketball Practice Squad, and
• JV Wrestling Practice Squads (they don't cheer at games).

Practices are after school at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church or Valley High School. The season length depends on the squad, and there are practice and camp requirements in the summer before your 9th-grade year.

Game schedules vary, and calendars are given months in advance. Attendance is mandatory for practices and games. There are costs, and fundraising is necessary as cheerleading isn't funded by the district.

Tryouts for the non-competitive 9th-grade Dance Team are in early April of an 8th-grade year. Team members will learn three routines (jazz, pom, and hip-hop) and perform at 9th-grade football and basketball games, the WDM 4th of July parade, and the VSW/VHS Homecoming parade. Practices are twice a week in the summer before 9th grade and after school during the school year. Joining the Dance Team is a fun way to make new friends, and team socials are scheduled once a month.

Students can discuss their faith and how it relates to their daily life and activities. The schedule includes guest speakers, retreats, and huddle groups throughout the year. Intramurals are split into Fall and Spring Leagues at school. You can pick from various sports like Flag Football, Tennis, Basketball, Sand Volleyball, Bowling, Golf, and more throughout the year. Men, women, and coed teams are encouraged to sign up and join in activities they like. You don't need to be an expert athlete—just have a desire to have fun, stay active, and compete with your fellow students. You can find information and sign-up sheets in the main office at Valley Southwoods.

Helpers assist with the day-to-day operation of the Media Center, such as checking out books to students, re-shelving materials, helping select new books, etc.

Mock Trial introduces students to the legal system by providing a challenging, academic competition. The students play the roles of attorneys, plaintiffs, and defendants. Local attorneys serve as their coaches. Lawyer roles require critical thinking skills and witness roles require some ability to act.

South Woods Ambassador Group – All 9th grade students are welcome to join! SWAG promotes a positive school climate. We organize fun and informative events and activities for the school. We need creative and positive leaders to help us spread kindness and respect! Listen for announcements.

The Silver Cord Program began at Valley High School in the fall of 2001 as a graduation incentive program to promote a lifetime of community service. The award is a graduation award available to WDMCS seniors who volunteer a minimum of 50 hours for a minimum of three different non-profit organizations during every year of high school.

Student Leadership is in charge of various drives, helps to encourage school spirit and plans activities that they would like to see implemented during or after the school day, such as starting clubs, community service projects and fund-raisers.

The Tigerlillies are recognized as a club sport. Our main focus is the annual Water Show in the spring. The Tigerlillies season is typically a two month season with a few clinic opportunities prior to the start of the season. This activity requires about five hours a week.

Meets in the Southwoods weight room. Open to all ninth-grade students. Supervised weight training times and days of the week will be announced at the beginning of each school year.

The Yearbook staff is responsible for all aspects of putting the yearbook together and will consist of the following positions: taking pictures and using your own creativity to make individual pages for the yearbook. Students interested should add the informational meeting at the beginning of the school year. Listen for the announcement about this meeting when the school year has begun.
